Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, is a federal cash assistance program for people who are disabled, blind, or elderly. It is administered by the Social Security Administration. We help clients appeal denials of SSI benefits.

We also help clients who were awarded SSI benefits but have a problem later.  For example, the Social Security Administration might say that the person receiving SSI no longer qualifies for SSI, or that there has been an overpayment.  We also help clients with SSI-related Medicare problems.

Note that the SSI program is not the same as the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI or SSD) program.

Applicants may call the telephone intake line, except that applicants whose legal problem is SSI need to apply through Community Legal Services (CLS).  For the intake hours at CLS, see the SSI page of CLS's web site.

Applicants may also apply online (for legal problems other than SSI).

If you need help applying for public benefits, unemployment compensation, or the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), free help is available from the City of Philadelphia.  You can get one-on-one counseling from BenePhilly over the phone or in person.
